Good for you--you found the blog! Take some time and figure out how it works and save this link as one of your favorites! Trust me, you will use the blog all year!
Mainly we have a class blog so that you have access to me after school hours and I have access to you as well. You can ask me questions, run ideas by me and other classmates, let me know things, etc. Also, you will have assignments that can only be handed in via the blog. (In college you will take an online class, so I'm trying to prepare you for that as well).
So, your first assignment is to comment on this post! You can tell us what you've been doing all summer, which book you liked the best, what you're thinking of doing for Graduation Project, or anything else you feel is important.
If you need to email me, my email address is hannah.moon@nhcs.net. I do check my email over the summer and I'll be checking this blog as well.
Remember, you have until August 26 to post a comment. It's a grade, so start off strong!
I can't wait to meet all of you!
One suggestion: as you are reading East of Eden, keep a character list of who's who. I'm re-reading the book now, and it's definitely helping me.
ReplyDeleteTrust me, everyone is important (especially in the end!)
So far this summer has been a productive one for me. I've been taking dance classes almost everyday, and running practices for the dance team at school. I've read both books already and while I enjoyed reading both, I favored East of Eden because it described different stories between different familes, yet they were all connected in some way. I watched the movie after I read it and it was horrible compared to the book. It missed A LOT of key information and it started off with Cal following Kate, which was more than half way into the book. On another note,I plan on doing something dance related for Graduation Project, but I haven't yet decided a more specific topic about dance that I want to do.
ReplyDeleteThis summer I had surgery on my ankle, so I haven't been doing very much besides regaining that strength to dance full out again. Although, it has given me plenty of time to work on these few assignments, which is great. Between the two books we are reading, I think I'm leaning more towards the Kite Runner, but I still enjoyed East of Eden too! I am not a very emotional person(honestly), but the Kite Runner did make me cry. A book that has the ability to evoke that sort of emotion is a very powerful one in my opinion. Don't get me wrong East of Eden could do that too, but I honestly was rather annoyed with most of the characters in that book too be emotionally affected by it. The Kite Runner's involvement with the practice of selling children, just struck that desire I have to do something to stop Human Trafficking. I seem to always come back to it as topic for Senior Project even though it is so far from what I want to major in college.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you had to have ankle surgery! I hope you have a swift recovery and everything is going well. Hope you're having a great summer and see you soon!
DeleteI cried when I read The Kite Runner for the first time, too!
DeleteOops! I posted on the wall thing instead of commenting. Guess I didn't read the directions very well.
ReplyDeleteHi everyone! My summer has mainly been taken up by moving. I've had cheer practice here and there, but not too much of it. I thoroughly enjoyed The Kite Runner. In fact, I think it would be great if our class could do something for the people in Afghanistan. I was thinking possibly raising some money and sending it to them to help build shelters and provide the people there with the necessities of life that have been taken from them.Just an idea. As for Graduation Project, I haven't exactly chosen yet, but I want to do something that helps children or other people in need. I hope everyone is having a fantastic summer and I'll see you guys soon! :)
ReplyDeleteLook up the Khaled Hosseini Foundation. It's the guy who wrote The Kite Runner
DeleteSo far, my summer has been going well. I've been regularly visiting the beach and enjoying having the free time. Still at a loss for a graduation project topic, but I'm working on it. Hopefully I'll have some inspiration by the end of the summer.
ReplyDeleteHey guys! My summer so far has been awesome. I've gone on a mission trip to Atlanta and went to D.C. for ten days to shadow doctors and other physicians at the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine. I got to hold many organs, suture a pigs foot and watch a live knee surgery. I've been working a lot and hanging out at the beach. I really enjoyed East of Eden and I am working on the Kite Runner. As for senior project I would like to work with children at homeless shelters and hopefully raise awareness about eating healthier. See you guys in school!
ReplyDeleteHey everybody, I hope you're all having an amazing summer! I have had a great summer so far. I got a job as a hostess at Uncle Louie's Pizza Lounge so I have been working most of the summer. When I haven't been working, I have been at the beach or the pool. I have finished reading East of Eden and although it was hard to get into, I really enjoyed it. I am still reading The Kite Runner but it seems really good so far. For senior project I think I want to do something with computers or technology. I would really like to work with kids too! I hope everyone enjoys the rest of their summer!
ReplyDeleteHowdy guys! I hope you all are having a great summer! So far my summer's consisted of a ton of preparation for basketball season, lots of reading, and relaxing. Im still reading East of Eden (which seems to be getting better as I read on) and finished The Kite Runner a while back. It was a great book and seems to connect with a lot of other literature and film in many ways in regards to friendship and redemption. For senior project I'm considering doing something in connection with children's literacy and how it effects people throughout life. See you all in school (this should be interesting seeing as how most of us have been in a class before)!
ReplyDeleteHappy Summer to all! My summer has been pretty eventful. I've been training for cross country season and I was hired by my neighbor to help set up beautiful beach wedding arbors. I also got hired at Uncle Louie's Pizza Lounge as a hostess, with Morgan Foster. It's a really nice place if anyone ever wants a nice pizza dinner (trying to get the word out). One last thing about my summer, my mom has been pregnant and her due date is coming up this Sunday. We are all waiting anxiously for my only sibling, baby Elizabeth! I can't wait to meet her! Back to the "back to school" subjects- out of the two books that we've been assigned, the Kite Runner has by far been my favorite. East of Eden was a struggle for me, since I prefer "quick books" that skip the details and get to the climax quickly. However, the plot was a never-ending guessing game that admittedly kept my interest. As for senior project, I don't have a specific idea, but I'd like for it to make a difference in someone's life. Can't wait for school to start!
ReplyDeleteThis Summer has been really eventful for me! My family and I visited Charleston for my Mom's Birthday, and that was so much fun. I then headed to Washington, D.C. with my siblings and youth group to visit all of the monuments! A week after I returned home from D.C. I was off again to Atlantic Beach, NC with my boyfriend. There was a lot of time spent on the beach and swimming in the ocean. To finish my Summer off I went to see one of my favorite bands, Train, play at the Raleigh Amphitheater. This last month of summer will be spent finishing up my reading and writing for this class! I have a fantastic idea for senior project, and I would really love to get a head start on it! East of Eden is definitely my least favorite of the two, I feel like it just carries on and on about small details. The Kite Runner has always been one of my favorite books to read, and I was really excited to see that it was on our reading list! School should be fun, I just wish Summer would last a little longer!
ReplyDeleteHey everybody! This summer has been absolutely amazing for me. It was the first time that I went hiking in the mountains! My father, nephew, and I all made it up to the highest point in the Smoky Mountains. I'm not exactly sure what to do for senior project yet but I do have a few ideas. I can't wait for school to start but I do wish that summer was just a little bit longer!
ReplyDeleteHi everyone! I hope your summer has been great!I have been working almost everyday but have been to the mountains. I stayed for a week and read the Kite Runner and part of East of Eden while I was up there. I loved the Kite Runner and East of Eden was pretty good. I can't believe summer is almost over but am excited about the new school year!

ReplyDeleteHey Everybody! My summer has been very eventful and it's hard to believe it's almost over! I have had dance almost every day and it keeps me pretty busy. I am especially excited for this year's Laney dance team. We have a lot of new dancers and Brianna is a great captain! Other than dance I have been visiting the beach as much as possible. I defiantly got a ton of sun earlier this August when we vacationed to Hawaii. It was an amazing trip and I hated to leave. The plane ride to Hawaii was excruciatingly long but gave me plenty of time to catch up on my summer reading. My favorite novel so far has been The Kite Runner. It was my second time reading it and I liked being able to analyze more. East of Eden was also exciting and a lot better than I thought it would be. I have been researching graduation project ideas but I'm still not sure exactly what I want to do. I wish summer didn't have to end but I'm also excited for this year!
ReplyDeleteHi everyone! This summer has been one of the best yet and I'm a little bummed that it's coming to an end in just a few days. I feel like I have been on the go constantly this summer but I've really enjoyed it. At the end of the June my family, and extended family, stayed in Ocean Isle Beach for a week and it was really nice to spend time with them and just relax. I also went away for 3 weeks at the end of July to a Young Life camp in Georgia called SharpTop Cove. There I spent my time volunteering in the dining hall and helped serve 500-700 campers their meals. It was an amazing experience and I hope I get the opportunity to do it again.
ReplyDeleteI've read both of the books but I really enjoyed The Kite Runner. I think Khaled Hosseini is a fantastic writer and I really appreciate the fact the we got to read a recent New York Times bestseller novel. As for Graduation Project I have been dreaming of doing a charity fashion show since middle school. I would use local stores to donate clothing and have fashion show guests bid on clothing as it came down the runway. My hope is that the money would go to a local orphanage or to help fight hunger in Africa.
Can't wait to start SENIOR year with you all! See you guys Monday!
Hi! Summer has been good, I've been bouncing around from one family vacation to another, trying to get things organized for school, baby sitting my nephew, and a whole bunch of other random activities. Slightly wishing for a few more weeks of sleeping in, but I guess waking up at 6 wont be the end of the world. I really enjoyed both books, and surprisingly, though East of Eden had me yelling at the characters every other page, the varying stories and backgrounds made it just a little bit more interesting then The Kite Runner. Senior Project is going to be interesting, I want my topic to be related to the lack of knowledge about Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) for both doctors and parents, but it might be to difficult of a topic to single out.
ReplyDeleteHey everybody! My summer has been great so far! I've been working alot at Shell Island where I'm a waitress, and in my free time I've been going to the beach and visiting my family.
ReplyDeleteThe highlight of my Summer was probably when I worked at a camp up in the North Carolina mountains. I was a camp counselor for five weeks and I got to meet a bunch of new people and try so many new things. It was such a cool experience.
My favorite book was probably The Kite Runner. But I also really enjoyed East of Eden, even though I didn't think I would.
For my graduation project I think I am going to do a bookdrive. One of our family friends started an orphanage called Home of Hope in India a few years ago and they are always in need of books for the girls. I'm not positive about that, but it's probably the best idea I have so far. Can't wait to see all my senior friends on Monday!
Hello guys! My summer has been comprised mostly of hanging out with friends and reading. My goal was to read 15 books, but I'm starting number 17 tonight! I have read The Kite Runner before, but East of Eden was new for me. I liked The Kite Runner better, but it could just be because I went into East of Eden with a bad attitude. I thought it would be long and boring, which was true for the first little bit, but I found myself liking that one much better by the end. As for graduation project, I've had an idea for a while. Something along the lines of the lack of spelling and grammar education, and the impact technology has/is having on our abilities. I would like to do a spelling bee for the product. I'm still thinking about specifics and the age group I would be aiming at. The next couple weeks are going to be really hectic for me because I got my first paid job playing a musical at Thalian Hall! This takes up way more time than I anticipated, but it is something that I've wanted to do for a while now. Hope everyone has a nice last weekend! Can't wait to see y'all on Monday!
